Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my prewar townhouse renovation and reflect on neighborhood changes in NYC. Hope you have a nice stay!

Framed

Framed

Demolition is done, the structure has been reinforced with new beams where needed, and now my new apartment can emerge from the rubble! This week Al and his guys built a labyrinth of framing walls on the parlor floor. It’s a weird feeling to see the 2D plans we’ve been reviewing now taking shape in 3D at life size! Everything feels a little smaller than I had expected now that things are getting boxed in, but I know this is relative to the open loft-like space I got used to after the demo.

Al warned me that things will be anticlimactic from here out. Once framing is finished, then electrical, gas and water pipes will be installed and that stage won’t be very dramatic visually. There may be a long gap before the next post (unless Al can take a break and help me get the gabion wall set up in the backyard. He’s collected a nice assortment of pipes to stuff in the wall and I’m really glad that he’s on board with that project.)

The main banner photo above is the larger bedroom, the same location before demolition.

Looking up at the ceiling: new framing under old beams and the original oak plank subfloor on the second floor. Note the gas light piping embedded in the ceiling. It’s going to get sealed up and remain in the house like a time capsule.

Below are some in-progress shots.

Next week framing will start upstairs. It feels like the ‘Before’ version of the pics above. Enjoy it while it lasts!
